Santa Barbara’s NoTell Motels

An excerpt from Online Santa Barbara News resource EdHat’s Ernie Salomon reported on April 17, 2015 that             “The people of Santa Barbara had better wake up! Our city is being overrun by illegal vacation rentals in our R Zoned residential neighborhoods.  It is against Santa Barbara zoning laws for any type of short term hotel/motel type rental in R zoning.

At present there are about 1400 homes for rent by the night in greater Santa Barbara on alone.

These short term vacation rentals have severe adverse impacts socially, educationally, and financially.  They take more of our rental housing stock off the market.  They reduce the number of families with children and cost the City’s school systems about $10,000 for each child that are forced to move out of town with their parents because they’re unable to find a home here.  These vacation rentals change the complexion of our residential neighborhoods from the stability of long term residents to the instability of transient neighborhoods.

There are issues of noise and crime from short term renters. While the City Council turns their back on this problem fireman, police officers, and others can no longer afford to live here.  Is this a bad public policy when the vacation renters don’t shop here, don’t have an interest in the community, don’t belong to any local organizations, and schools lose revenues from the state?”

Shockingly some local real estate agents use the Santa Barbara MLS message board/email system to advertise these short term rentals to their peers which is a violation of the MLS rules and regulations, and the Code of Ethics?
